For those that aren’t already aware, Tockington Manor School ex pupil Holly Hill is taking part in tomorrow’s Boat Race.
Holly Hill from Slimbridge is making history as, for the first time, men and women compete on the same day and The BNY Mellon Boat Race is joined on the Tideway by The Newton Women’s Boat Race.
Holly is rowing for Cambridge University and the race concludes a huge amount of commitment, focus and very hard work that has been part of her everyday life for the last 18 months.
An athlete from the GB Rowing Start programme, we wish her all the best for Saturday, and for a successful future both at University and in her GB rowing career.
Abigail Blackwell and Isabelle Preston have both had their stories selected for the second round of judging by the Reading Agency in the Radio 2 500 Words story competition. They have been selected out of 120,000 entries to go through to the next round. There are still 3,800 stories in this second round. Will they be in the final 50 to go to St.James’s Palace? We are crossing our fingers. A huge congratulations to both girls for getting this far. It is a massive achievement.
To all other hopeful story-writers whose stories have not been selected this time, Radio 2 has sent the following email : Please do not be disheartened and PLEASE keep on writing. The competition was fierce, with a record 120,000 entries this year. Whilst we can’t give individual feedback, the overwhelming response from our teachers and librarians marking the stories was that the standard was extremely high this year. Our judges had a GREAT time marking the stories, so you should feel very proud.
Thank you so much for taking part. It’s hugely inspiring to see just how talented our nation’s young writers are.
We should hear more in May – so keep your fingers crossed for Abi and Isabelle!
